Post Study Work Visa (PGWP)

Although studying in Canada and getting a work visa are considered as one of Canada’s temporary residence programs, they are considered as a path to stay and obtain permanent residence in Canada. International students who complete post-secondary education in Canada can apply for a post-study work visa to stay in Canada and gain Canadian work experience. This work experience allows them to apply for permanent residency through the Canadian Work Experience Program (CEC).

One of the important points when applying for a work visa after studying is that your master’s permit must be valid at the time of application. If your master’s permit has expired, you must get a visitor record or leave Canada and apply. You can apply for this visa up to 180 days after graduation.

The validity period of this visa will be issued by the case officer according to the length of the study period and will be from one year to three years. Note that in order to qualify for this work visa, the duration of the study period must be more than 8 months. This visa is issued only once and cannot be renewed.

With a post-graduation work permit, like all Open Work Permits, graduates can:

  • have a full-time or part-time job and work for any job position in any organization; or
  • Be self-employed

Necessary conditions for obtaining a work visa after education:

  • Completion of studies and obtaining transcripts and graduation certificate.
  • Education that leads to a diploma or educational certificate.
  • Studying is done full-time and continuously. Part-time studies are accepted only in the last semester and study leave under certain conditions, but finally, the officer will be responsible for determining and issuing a work visa.
